Morning Speaker: Tom Sommerville, CSI Specialist for the Town of Marana, will explain the working process of collecting forensic evidence from a crime scene (i.e. latent prints, DNA, etc… Tom was a 30-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department, before coming to Arizona in 2003 and joining the Marana Police Force. He will discuss a cold case homicide that the MPD is investigating, and how they exhumed the body then had the FBI’s Facial Imaging Unit construct a clay model of the victim’s facial features.

Afternoon WorkshopThe Use and Misuse of Adjectives in a Story Plot.

Jan Pope, an Arizona Mystery Writers member and author, studied acting for several years while trying her hand at writing. She soon discovered many techniques and attitudes used in her acting actually helped with her writing. Jan has had several travel articles published on line by Gap-Year, a British publisher. She is also the author of a mystery novel, Deadly Dreams.

Workshop-(10:15 to 11:30 am) - Mike Alvarez: How to Avoid The Seven Deadly Writing Errors.

Mike has been writing for over thirty years. His stories, poems, and articles have appeared in such publications as the Arizona Daily Star and Writer’s Digest. His Writer’s Digest award-winning story, “The Human Element,” was included in the short fiction anthology, Computer Legends, Lies and Lore (Ageless Press, 1994). Mike has published two Nick Madrid mysteries, Deliver Us From Evil and The Last Place God Made; a young adult mystery novel, The Treasure of the Santa Ritas, and the suspense thriller, Kino’s Gold. He has also published a book about writers and their craft, Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Writers. The classes Mike teaches at Pima Community College, where he’s taught writing since 1990, confirm Mike’s enthusiasm for his
craft.
Mike will discuss the most common writing flaws and help you discover ways to make writing more desirable to editors and readers alike. Learn how to write a compelling opening scene for your next mystery. Mike has written and published numerous short stories, and novels.
