Today was our last meeting until September 18, 2010. We will not meet in June, July or August.

Today, started with Donna Copen Mckinnis, a SSA member, who spoke on all aspects of self-publishing. Donna gave details about her journey that started with a monthly newsletter she wrote to her family and friends while she and her family lived in Japan for five years. The magazine became very popular and it was suggested she write it as a book. Ten years later, she did! Donna also presented two lists. The first was the things she did right when it came to “self-publishing” her book. The second list was the mistakes she made. Donna’s presentation was valuable for those who want to self publish, those thinking about it and even those who would never go down that path. Her presentation had lessons for all.

After lunch, we had our general business meeting. Molly described her idea for a monthly magazine called Mystery Mania. She hopes to have the first edition ready for September. She will be sending emails with a description, goals and guidelines for submissions. Clark Lohr volunteered to be our new Treasurer! Thank you Clark!!!!  Mary Ann passed the gavel to Kay Lesh, our new presiding chair. We all thanked Mary Ann, Carol and Rae for their excellent work on the Board of Directors. We will miss them on the Board. We are all looking forward to getting back together this fall at the next meeting.

Next our Workshop, Mary Bellin, Mary Ann Hutchison, and Molly Mckinney read a few pages of their stories. Both Mary and Mary Ann selected the workshop on Character Development by Mary Ann that most influenced their first chapters of their novels. Molly read a short story that was influenced by all the police detective’s stories and procedures we learned from our speakers during the 2009/2010 season.  The best part of the readings was the feed back from the members. Mary Ann even got an “Ah Ha” moment when she said she was having trouble with the ending and an alternative she hadn’t thought about was suggested.

See you September 11, 2010.
